Can CBD helpful for Lyme Disease
What is Lyme Disease?
Lyme disease is a bacterial infectious disease which is caused by the bacteria Borrelia Burgdorfer. The most common source of this bacteria is Deer. Lyme disease is transmitted from deer to human by a deer tick bite. Lyme disease can transmit from an infected person to a healthy person through blood transfusion. Lyme disease can also pass through the placenta that is why the possibility of its transfer from pregnant mother to baby cannot be ruled out.
According to an estimate, almost 3 million people fell prey to Lyme disease. The most common area of Lyme disease is the Northeastern state. This disease is very lethal because the patient continues to experience symptoms post-treatment, even after the complete removal of bacterial infection. These post-treatment symptoms are known as PTLDS (Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome.
There are the following major symptoms of Lyme disease,
- Wandering Joint Pain
- Brain Fog
- Severe Headache
- Skin rashes
- Heart Palpitations
- Inflammation in different parts of the body
- Neurological symptoms
- Numbness in hands and feet
The symptoms of PTLDS are,
- Swollen or inflammations in joints
- Memory and speech issues
- Foggy Brain
What is CBD?
CBD (Cannabidiol) is the chemical extract of the hemp (Cannabis) plant and it is used to treat different diseases including pain and inflammation. CBD is non-psychoactive and non-toxic. In this article, our main question is “Can we use CBD for Lyme Disease?” Well, in short, YES! We can use CBD for Lyme disease.
CBD for Lyme Disease
Though it is not proven that CBD has a direct effect on Lyme disease or PTLDS, many research studies have reported that CBD might help with many of the symptoms of Lyme Disease and PTLDS. CBD has an ability to enhance the immune system also.
ü Effect of CBD on the Endocannabinoid System:
The human body contains an Endocannabinoid System (ECS). This system regulates many important functions of the body such as pain, inflammation, and emotions. ECS system has two main receptors that control the working of the whole ECS and immune system. These receptors are CB1 and CB2.
CB1 is responsible for the regulation of many functions such as memory, emotion, and pain reception through the CNS (Central Nervous System).
CB2 receptors are found primarily on immune responses and inflammation. CB2 receptors modulate the immune system.
CBD interacts with both these receptors and helps the body to manage the symptoms of Lyme disease and PTLDS. CBD helps to manage different symptoms of Lyme disease separately.
ü CBD and Anxiety:
Anxiety is another symptom of both Lyme disease and PTLDS. Multiple researches have reported that CBD might be helpful in reducing anxiety and depression. The mechanism of reducing anxiety with the help of CBD is still unknown but according to the hypothesis, CBD helps to improve the blood flow in those areas of the brain which are responsible for emotions production. Limbic System and Amygdala are the two main parts of the brain that controls emotions.
ü CBD and Pain:
Pain in joints and other body parts is another major symptom of Lyme disease. CBD has been found to be very effective in managing joint and muscle pain. CBD does so by interacting with the endocannabinoid system. Research studies have shown that CBD might be very effective in reducing the pain in serious joint and bones related diseases such as Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis.
CBD interacts with the Endocannabinoid system and stimulates it to reduce both inflammation and pain reception. But still, these facts are not medically proven so we can say that for sure.
ü CBD enhances the Immune System:
CB2 receptors are located on the immune cells also. These immune cells include B cells, T cells, and macrophages. These cells play a key role in the immune system to fight against foreign particles and toxins. Research studies have reported that CBD might have an immunomodulating effect. CBD helps the immune system to remove the bacterial infection in Lyme disease. But the mechanism of CBD working with the immune system is not clear until.
There is another assumption about the immune system that is responsible for the production of inflammation. CBD interacts with CB2 receptors and stimulates them which in turn decreases the inflammation. Inflammation is another main symptom of both Lyme disease and PTLDS syndrome.
ü CBD enhances the Neurological System:
Inflammation in the brain is one of the main symptoms of Lyme disease. CB1 receptors are responsible for decreasing inflammation in the brain after reacting with CBD. On reaction with CBD, CB1 receptors decreases the secretion of cytokines chemicals. Cytokines chemicals are responsible for inflammation and hence CBD helps in reducing inflammation in the brain. Inflammation in the brain is also known as Neuroinflammation which can neurological symptoms of Lyme disease and PTLDS. CBD may help with these symptoms but medically there is very little information available in this regard.
Lyme disease and PTLDS (Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome) are responsible for many physiological and psychological symptoms. Symptoms management is the only way of treating both these diseases. Research studies have shown that CBD might be effective in managing these symptoms. CBD might be helpful in reducing pain, inflammation, and neuroinflammation in the body of a patient with Lyme disease. But all these effects have not been clinically studied yet.
Theoretically, we can surely say that CBD has a very strong relationship with Lyme disease and PTLDS syndrome. But for more assurance, we need some more clinical studies in this regard.
